Inbound calls

What happens when someone dials your number, what the caller hears in each situation, and how to check it worked.

What you will achieve

You will understand exactly how an inbound call reaches your agent and what a caller hears when something is not set up.

How an inbound call is answered

  1. The caller dials a number on your provider.
  2. The provider sends a request to the address you set in its console (see your provider's page).
  3. Phynxa looks up the agent assigned to the dialled number.
  4. If there is a published agent, Phynxa tells the provider to stream the call's audio to it, and the agent speaks its opening line.

The caller's number, the dialled number and the call direction are saved with the call.

What the caller hears when it is not set up

SituationThe caller hears
The number has no published agent"Sorry, no agent is available to take this call."
Phynxa's public address is not configured"This service is not configured for calls yet."

Limits

  • Live calls at once. A workspace can have a limited number of live calls at a time (20 by default). Beyond that, new calls are refused until one ends.
  • Longest call. A call is closed after a maximum length (one hour by default).
  • Requests are authenticated. The address contains a key unique to your workspace. If you regenerate or lose it, copy the current one from Webhook setup.

Testing

Call the number from a phone that is not your provider's test number. Say a few sentences. Check History.

Expected result

The agent answers on the first ring, and the call appears in History with direction Inbound, the caller's number, a transcript and a cost.

Troubleshooting

  • It rings and rings. The number's voice webhook is not pointed at Phynxa. See the provider page.
  • The caller hears the "no agent" message. Publish the agent and check Answered by.
  • No call appears in History. The call never reached Phynxa; check the provider's call log.
