Outbound calls

Place a test call, call a contact, schedule a call or run a campaign. Outbound calling runs on Twilio, or on Exotel once its flow is set up.

What you will achieve

You will make an agent call a phone number, and know the four ways to do it.

Prerequisites

  • Twilio connected (outbound calling runs through your Twilio account), or Exotel connected with its Flow (app) ID saved: see Exotel. The call goes out on the provider the agent's number belongs to.
  • An agent with direction Outbound or Inbound / Outbound, and published. A paused agent is refused ("This agent is paused").
  • A default outbound number (see Assign a number to an agent), or a number assigned to that agent, to use as the caller ID.

The four ways

  1. Test call. On Phone numbers, choose Test call. Pick an outbound agent, enter the number in international format (for example +14155552671), and choose Call.
  2. Call a contact. On Contacts, use the call action on a contact. See Contacts.
  3. Schedule a call. Pick a date and time for one contact. See Scheduled calls.
  4. Campaign. Call a whole list. See Campaigns.

Developers can also place a call from code: see REST API.

Configuration details

  • Caller ID. The call comes from the agent's own number if it has one, otherwise from the default outbound number.
  • Blocked contacts. A number that belongs to a contact with status blocked is never called.
  • Limits. Dialling is capped to protect your account: 20 calls per person per hour and 200 per workspace per hour. Beyond that you get "Call limit reached. Try again later."
  • Who can call. Members may place calls, because trying an agent on a phone is using it.

Testing

Use Test call with your own mobile number. Answer, speak, and check History.

Expected result

Your phone rings, the agent speaks when you answer, and History shows the call with direction Outbound.

Troubleshooting

  • "This agent is inbound-only and cannot place calls." Change its direction on the Advanced tab.
  • "This agent is paused." Publish it.
  • "That number belongs to a blocked contact." Change the contact's status.
  • A message about Twilio credentials. Connect Twilio under Providers.
